I would have to say that the pawn is the most valuable piece on the board. Not only can it be the fatal end to a game by checkmate, it can also be promoted to the other pieces, including a queen, a knight, a bishop, and a rook.
Although, the knight is the most unique-moving piece on the board, and it can get your king and queen in the same line of attack, and it cannot be captured. When i first started playing chess, I always thought that the queen was the be-all-end-all
piece that you could not lose no matter what, and if it was captured, I was sure that I would lose that game. But, as I went on to become a better player, I started to realize that it really wasn't the greatest piece on the board, even though it can move to twice as many places on the board as all the other pieces.
I would say that in the middle of the game, all the pieces on the board have a very important job to do, otherwise, why would they even be there.
All in all, if I would have to choose the piece that would be the most valuable one at the end of the game, it would be the pawn.
And I'm not saying that you should just go all willy-nilly to try to promote your pawns, while giving up the rest of your pieces on the middle of a game. Because, who knows, you may get all your pawns taken away within the first 20 moves.
My advice to younger players who are just starting: Don't just give up all your pieces for a not even a promised promotion for a pawn, a checkmate that may or may not work, or anything else. Just make sure that all your pieces are protected by one another.
